The Suit by Can Themba In the short-story, The Suit, Can Themba writes about the effects of adultery on one unfortunate couple. Philemon as the protagonist undergoes the most drastic change, although variation in Mathilda’s behaviour can also be observed. Nevertheless, the author focusses mainly on developing the character of Philemon. The reader is introduced to Philemon as he is struggling to get out of bed without waking his wife (“He did not like to wake his wife …”). This information immediately gives the impression of a loving relationship, and this assumption manifests itself throughout the short story. The whole second paragraph describes Mathilda as the biggest joy in the life of a otherwise “poor” man.
