What makes a good IT project manager? By Alan Bray Recent research completed by KPMG International tells us something that will probably come as no surprise. Almost two-thirds of the enterprises surveyed owned up to having experienced failed IT projects in the past year. This finding triggers important questions about how enterprises can improve the management of IT projects, especially when the average cost of failure recorded in the KPMG sample is around £8m a time. Most businesses would pay at least lip service to the value of successful IT project management, but many will recognise that finding the right skill set is much harder. Ever been a parent? While it is easy to confuse project management with the management of people it is not some sort of black art. Reduced to its simplest, project management is the craft of managing tasks and leading people. A good project manager must have the ability to lead and motivate a team of individuals. Being a parent is an excellent qualification for a project manager, as you have to learn quickly how to reason with a demanding child.
