Addison, Thomas (1793-1860), British physician and endocrinologist (scientist who studies the hormone system in the body). Addison first described the symptoms resulting from degeneration of the cortex, or outer layer, of the adrenal glands, now called Addison’s Disease. Addison also conducted important early research on tuberculosis, pernicious anemia, pneumonia, and various skin diseases. Born in Longbenton, England, Addison studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, earning his medical degree in 1815. After serving as a surgeon at Lock Hospital in London, he was an assistant physician and a faculty lecturer at Guy’s Hospital in London before becoming a staff physician there in 1837.Aargau, canton in caliphate Córdoba more...
