The following paper will analyze a scene from the film “Amelié”, directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. This scene was chosen because it shows Point of View shots from Amelié’s perspective. It is the key scene in the movie, moreover, when she decides to change her lifestyle, therefore her point of view at this point in the film is very important.
The action taking place in this scene is Amelié watching a newscast about the death of Princess Diana. ...
There is a lot of camera movement in each scene so I will use more than one still frame for some of the shots in the scene. ... The scene begins with a shot of the television. The narrator is talking about the life changing event Amelié is going to have. ... This represents how her world is about to change. ... When she hears about the death of Princess Diana she immediately turns and looks at the camera. ... We can see she is pretty shocked and now absorbed by the news from her reaction. ... Furthermore, the background is out of focus, which makes us focus even more on her face. ... I believe the fact that the director chose to leave it so far away was not only because it was an accurate view of what Amelié would actually be watching, but also to show that that is not the real reason why her life is going to change. ... The camera cuts to a shot of Amelie’s feet seen from above. ... It makes us, the audience, realize that Princess Diana’s death is not really what changes Amelie’s life.
