Most kids can recover from any difficult situation faster than an adult. In the book, The Endless Steppe by Esther Hautzig, Esther is one of those kids. Esther lived in Vilna, Poland, but during WWII she was exiled to the Siberian steppe. Here she faced many hardships, such as hunger, disease and being separated from her family. She dealt with every problem she faced. Esther had a rock-like character. You could throw her off a cliff and she would survive. Most importantly Esther knows that she is very stubborn, and she is! A lot of the time she doesn’t listen to people and only does what she wants to do, hence her very strong character. Here is an example of her stubbornness, “If I had any sense I would have given up then, but I came from a long line of stubborn idiots.” (185). This quote is Esther describing how stubborn she was about entering the declamation contest.
