The Breath of Life An In-depth Look at Oxygen By Rebecca Hubbs The same breath that gives us the ability to live, by providing air in our lungs, can actually lengthen our lives. Oxygen is essential. No living thing can be without it. Primarily, we think of oxygen for respiration. This gas, an element, has been used from combustion to therapy. Let’s focus now on oxygen therapy- what it is, what it does, and what it is said to cure. Thirsting for an answer to see how oxygen can cure disease, I took a trip to a wastewater treatment plant. Wastewater thrives with bacteria and viruses, yet it is the same water we drink that makes us healthy. How can that be? Water is purified and recycled. I discovered 95% oxygen and 5% chlorine is pumped into water to kill bacteria and viruses that evolve in it. I directed my attention to the reason oxygen played such an enormous role. Our body is made up of cells with defensive enzyme shield that protect us from bacteria and viruses. Without strong defensive enzyme shields, our cells become infected. The defensive shields stay strong when sufficient oxygen is present.
