Designing Society Without Female Rape
Rape is essentially an act of power and dominance. It is estimated that 15 to 40 percent of American women are victims of rape or attempt to rape. Women are more likely to be raped by someone they know; between 50 and 70 percent of all rapes occur within the context of a romantic relationship (acquaintance rape), and more than half the time the assault takes place in the victims home. Rape is one of the most underreported crimes in the United States, due to the victims fear of embarrassment, humiliation, or retaliation by the rapist. ... These numbers show that female rape is a terrible, but unfortunately common phenomenon in today’s society. It is as a big dirty spot and must be removed to create a better society. The question is what causes female rape and how social psychology can help us to eliminate it?
The first rape cause to discuss is pornography. ... Indeed, several studies have shown that portrayals of women enjoying rape and other kinds of sexual violence can lead to increased acceptance of rape myths in both males and females. ... Subsequently, all subjects were shown a second rape portrayal. The students who had been exposed to the pornographic depiction of rape were significantly more likely than the students in the control group to perceive the second rape victim as suffering less trauma, to believe that she actually enjoyed it and to believe that women in general enjoy rape and forced sexual acts
Exposure to messages in violent pornography suggesting that aggression against women has positive consequences, is justified or is erotic may implant and strengthen these ideas in the audience as well as stimulate certain arousal processes that might "energize" aggressive responses.
