George Washington

I. George Washington (1789 – 1797): None/Federalist II. BIOGRAPHY: Born in Virginia, this wealthy slave-owner spent most of his life serving his country as a soldier and statesman. As a young colonel in the Virginia Militia, his defeat by the French in Ohio began the French and Indian War (1754 – 1763). When the Revolutionary War began he was a delegate to the Continental Congress who quickly gave him command of the army. Despite repeated defeats, Washington managed to win the war. He refused an offer to become king and amazed the world by giving up his command. His presence at the Constitutional Convention made it legitimate; knowing that Washington would be the first president helped to ratify it. III. ELECTION RESULTS A) Election of 1788 (1789): Unanimous win. B) Election of 1792: Washington. IV. MAJOR DOMESTIC ISSUES A) Hamilton vs. Jefferson: Hamilton wants to create an industrial urban world as much like Great Britain as possible.
