Conrad 1 Kayleigh Conrad Mr. Crecco American Literature 2 5/13/03 The Main Theme in Giants In The Earth Giants In The Earth by O.E. Rolvaag is about a Norwegian family settling in the dakotas. It tells of many struggles and differences that a family shares, along with their neighbors. They go through many ups and downs , as well. The main theme in Giants In The Earth by O.E. Rolvaag is the conflict between a family’s new life on the prairie and their old Norwegian ways. Giants In The Earth is about a Norwegian family settling in the Dakotas along with three other families. They go through many difficulties. At first, they run into a tribe of indians, which terrifies all of the families. The women, especially, are scared. Per makes friends with the indians, anyway. Then, the family cow disappears. They also discover stakes from an Irish family that had claimed that land prior to Per and his family. They removed the stakes and stayed there. Beret, Per’s wife, found out that Per had removed their stakes and is very upset that he would do that. Removing another family’s land stakes is a crime. Especially in Beret’s eyes. After this incident Beret sinks into a depression and becomes very homesick for Norway, especially in the winter. And, when the men decided to adopt American names, Beret becomes disgusted. She Conrad 2 reaches her breaking point when a family passes through with a mother, Kari, whose son had died and she had buried him on the prairie. After that she becomes extremely religious.
