The construction of any personality theory involves concrete decisions concerning its structure, formation, development, and how it distinguishes the individual as unique. This theory is grounded in several existential principles to aid in forming this basis; namely that all individuals have a concrete existence and a subjective free will. Personality then, will be assumed to be influenced in part by the decisions arising out of this freedom; especially any negative, irrational or stressful decisions.
The scope of this theory will be to describe personality as encompassing the individual’s enduring personal characteristics, emotions, and morals through a lifelong process of internal development and external interaction. It should also be noted that this is a theory of normalcy; that is the scope of this theory is broad enough to indicate possible signs of abnormal personality based an individual’s extreme deviation from this model. This personality theory will be presented first in the form of its philosophical
structure, followed by an explanation of how this structure develops and functions to form the individual’s personality. ... 0 Structure
The essence of personality is the human spirit [1]; that is personality is a projection of our core selves, and an embodiment of our total being. The structure of personality is a holistic phenomenon which is directly tied to both the realm of reason [2] and the realm of sensation [3] within the human spirit. Although each realm is distinct in that one is of the body and one the mind, there is much interaction between these realms along the channels of interplay [4], allowing for limitless influences on personality. ... 1 Realm of Sensation
The realm of sensation or corporal realm is a major influence on the development of personality, and it is also the primary vehicle for its expression. ... The corporal realm then, functions as a storehouse for genetic and hereditary influences which may directly effect up to fifty percent of the individual’s personality. ... 0 Development. ... 2 Realm of Reason
The realm of reason is more complex as it contains several layers of consciousness, thus allowing for internal interactions which influence personality. ... The subliminal self also plays a major role in personality development and expression as it is constantly interacting with the being, providing information and guidance for social interactions. The effect of these processes on personality will be discussed in greater detail in the forthcoming sections of ‘3.0 Development.’
The second major level within the realm of reason is the subcognizant realm which is a hidden or repressed domain one’s personality. Common to this realm are any traumatic memories, socially unacceptable personality traits, and any information processed by the realm of reason which is discarded as unimportant or has been ignored by the supraliminal realm. The ongoing interactions of subliminal attention [9] occur at the subcognizant level, which can later reemerge to the level of being effecting personality in an indirect manner. The subcognizant realm is also able to regularly influence personality
at the level of being through rapid eye movement dreaming, day dreaming and occasionally through direct contact during moments of acute stress. The effect of these processes on personality will be discussed in greater detail in the forthcoming sections of ‘3.
