Tactical Avoidance

While in my eleventh grade, 6th period, high school English class, my class was given an assignment that I did not want to participate. The assignment was to identify different types of humor in cartoons, better known as comic strips. We spent most of that period, reading and studying the different types of humor associated with the comics that the instructor, Mrs. Witt, had brought. Before class was over, we were instructed to bring in a comic strip of our own. These comics were to be placed in a grab bag. When all of the students placed their comics into the bag, the bag would then be passed around the class and the students would then pick a strip. The class assignment was to identify the humor within the strip that had been picked and write a short essay based on the humor identified. While listening to Mrs. Witt, I thought the purpose of identifying the humor in comic strips was a bit trivial. This was the only assignment of its kind and it just did not seem to make sense to me as to why we were learning the material. It did not seem to fit in with the material that we had learned earlier in the semester and it did not reflect anything that we were scheduled to learn in the future. Somehow, someway, I was intent on finding a way to sabotage the assignment. I do realize that undertaking such a mission is not looked upon very highly by the members of the teaching community, but I was in high school at the time and I had, and still have, a very active imagination and was more then willing to utilize it.
