Mrs. Johnson, a strong women living on her southern farm with her younger daughter, Maggie is waiting for a visit by her older daughter, Dee. Dee is returining from her home in the city, and the mother has cleaned and swept the yard in order to make a goo impression. As she waits, she thinks of how independent Dee has been in the past, and of how self-confident and sophisticated she may be now. She contrats Dee with Maggie, who is awkward, homely, and burn-scarred, and who has never left home. She also contrasts Dee with herself, thinking of Dee's many oppurtunities for self-improvement while she herself has never had any oppurtunities at all.
