CBP mission statement

The purpose of this report is to evaluate the United States Border Patrol’s mission, vision, goals, and objective. ...

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BORDER PATROL
The Border Patrol’s mission is to detect and prevent the smuggling of narcotics and undocumented aliens into the United States. ... [Online]) Although today’s Agents enjoy the luxury of modern technology, they often rely on sheer determination to complete the mission. ...

BCBP’s MISSION STATEMENT

The following is the official version of the Bureau of Customs and Border Protection’s mission statement:
“We are the guardians of our Nation’s borders. ...
We serve the American public with vigilance, integrity, and professionalism” (CBP Mission Statement, 2003)

I used the three Ws method, described in our text, to evaluate the BCBP’s mission statement. (Goetsch, 2003) As I read the mission statement, I asked myself the following: Does the mission statement answer the questions of who the organization is and who the customers are? Does the mission statement state what the organization does? And finally, does the mission statement tell where the organization does its business?
The first line of the mission statement states exactly who the organization is, “We are the guardians of our Nation’s borders”. ... I feel that the Bureau of Customs and Border Protection’s mission statement is effective. ... It also avoids getting into how the mission will be accomplished. According to our text, these are all criteria of an effective mission statement. (Goetsch, 2003) With that said, I find it strange that the Bureau of Customs and Border Protection does not have a vision statement. As I have stated, the mission statement does an excellent job of telling who the organization is; however, without a vision statement I am left to wonder about where the organization is headed.
