The Anglo-Saxon people who lived during the “Dark Ages” from 449 to 1066 are thought of as being very different from people today. Now, people would never think to believe that anyone living over a thousand years ago could be anything like the people of today; they think that the people of two different time periods and cultures could not have anything in common. ... The epic poem Beowulf, written during the “Dark Ages,” proves that what terrified Anglo-Saxons then is exactly what terrifies Americans today: darkness, fire, and strong, powerful beings. ... This view that evil occurrences happen at night is also a fear of people now. People that perform evil deeds at night have the ability to hide without anyone seeing them.
