The story concludes with an italicized paragraph. Why does Smith want that paragraph to contrast with the surrounding text? As you consider that question, think about the word "dreams" as it applies to the story. Is Melanie involved in more than one kind of dream? "Desire on Domino Island" Publishers of romance novels actually provide writers with specific guidelines to follow in their manuscripts, and Smith is having fun with the notion that a writer can write well by filling in the blanks of an outline. She also criticizes quite explicitly the characters that writers most often create within the constraints of romances. Where in this story does she offer that criticism, what is the criticism, and do you find Smith to be persuasive in offering it?
