Due to the anti-drug campaigns, society¡¦s attitudes have changed in our youth and in our nation, assisted in halting trials of entry level drugs and which has declined drug use among teenagers. ... Congress, the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign has become the centerpiece of the countrys efforts to reduce demand for illegal drugs. ... The PDFA is marking anti-drugs in a really effective way. ... Teens in 2002 were significantly more likely to ¡§agree a lot¡¨ that the anti-drug messages taught you about the risks of using drugs, gave you new information or told you things you didn¡¦t know about drugs, made you aware that America¡¦s drug problem is a problem for you and your family, and made you less likely to try or use drugs. ... One such survey conducted says that due to anti-drug advertisements, ¡§Few teens honestly think drugs are cool to use.¡¨(Melillo 6) Many surveys show that the opinions of drugs have dropped a lot since showing these anti-drug ads. ... The opinion that ¡§not doing drugs was the cool thing to do¡¨(Melillo and Burke 7) rose from 35% in 1998 to 40% in 2002. ... The fact remains that as a result of the anti-drug campaign, attitudes about drugs have changed among teenagers.
In addition to changing the attitudes about drugs, these campaigns have actually helped in stopping drug use before it even starts. The problem is that many entry level drugs, such as marijuana, may lead to other dangerous drugs. ... Lloyd Johnson, from the University of Michigan, says his studies show that 18% of those to try marijuana move on to more serious drugs. His studies show that many kids move onto other dangerous drugs, which causes a very serious problem. His studies also show that 75% of those surveyed admit that the anti-drug campaigns ¡§deterred their drug use and convinced them to not move onto other drugs.¡¨ These advertisements still affected kids who had already tried entry-level drugs.
Alan Levitt, the senior advisor of the ONDCP, stated that ¡§Marijuana is the hardest of drugs to depict because it accepted and normalized. ... This explains why so many people use marijuana as a gateway to other drugs.¡¨ (Levitt 6) But in both of these cases, the advertisements still affected kids, whether currently using drugs or never having used them. ... It doesn¡¦t matter if the teen has never tried drugs or has; the advertisements have helped teens on both situations.
The overall usage of drugs among teenagers has declined as a result of these advertisements. ¡§This is your brain„m this is your brain on drugs¡¨, Just say No, and Drug Abuse Resistance Education or DARE.
