Clifford Geertz wrote this essay from a first hand experience, though he cites several experts in this study, his theories are made from personal interactions with the Balinesians and their culture.
Geertz divided this study into seven sub-topics which discuss and analyze particular points that he observed. Section one gives a humorous anecdote about how Geertz and his wife became a part of the village. ... However, Geertz sped up the acceptance process by showing his cowardly side by running with the Balinese during the raid and not pulling rank by standing up and pulling out his papers. After this incident Geertz and his wife were accepted into the village. Geertz takes the time to illustrate that though the Balinese tend to ignore outsiders they do in dire situations stand up for them as with the case of the villager who defended Geertz to the police during the raid.
