Abstract
“The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system that was developed by the Department of Defense in the early 1970s. Initially, GPS was developed as a military system to fulfill U. ... However, it was later made available to civilians, and is now a dual-use system that can be accessed by both military and civilian users. ... 12
Global Positioning System
The idea of global positioning began in the 1960s, through a joint effort of the Navy and Air Force. ... Then in 1968 a Department of Defense Four Service Steering Group was established to investigate the development of a Defense Navigation Satellite System that would satisfy DOD’s satellite navigation requirements. “By 1972, the best characteristics of each of these four programs had coalesced to form the general system characteristics and initial design parameters for the system now known as the NAVSTAR Global Positioning System.” (Committee on the Future of the Global Positioning System 1995) “GPS is a satellite-based navigation system that was developed by the U. ... ” (El-Rabbany 2002) GPS was initially developed as a military system. ... The system was later made available to civilians. ... (El-Rabbany 2002)
The way the system works is based on triangulation. There are three components to the system. ... The third is the receiver system, which consists of base station and handheld receivers. ... ” (Sandau 2002)
While it is based on triangulation, it takes four satellites signals to get accurate positioning; the fourth is acting as a reference for the other clock signals. ... GPS is also used for their guidance system when delivering missiles to a target.
