E-rater is the groundbreaking automated scoring system developed at ETS by researchers in natural language processing, a sub-field of artificial intelligence. Essays scored by expert faculty readers are used to build the e-rater scoring models. Once certified, these models are used to score essays on GRE topics. The system analyzes essays based on writing features specified in holistic scoring rubrics. Recent research indicates that the agreement rate between e-rater and expert faculty readers of GRE essays consistently exceeds 98 percent. Thus, students can use the tool to quickly and easily obtain a 'first cut' analysis of their writing in relation to clearly defined national standards for analytical writing at the graduate level.
