The beat generation was a generation that developed from a depression that was around in the late forties, early fifties. The beat generation started after world war two, as a reaction against the societies conformist nature and acceptance of materialistic roles in society that were surrounded by money. The generation of the time were being flooded by advertisements of the right way to live, and encouraged people to strive for the “normal” life that never existed. Consumer good were the way to live for America, and there were no anti-political movements of the time, these would develop later on, starting with the beat generation.
The beat generation was composed of people who were fed up with the materialistic nature of the nation (mainly America). ... Jazz artists were the main infiltrators of the beat generation, along with authors. ... Another element that influenced the beat generation was the fact that everyone strived to be the same and fit into a category. ...
The flowering of the Beat Generation in the late fifties was the result of a very slow germination process. ... The beat generation makes people look at music in a new way altogether, it gives expressive freedom, which I believe to be paramount to the way I play, and to me it’s all about expression. ... I think that these movements came about because there was too much conformity and not enough expression in the world, everything was getting too monotonous, so the beat generation started and that turned into the major movement of Psychedelia (the hippies), which combated this and changed the way music would sound forever, with the introduction of effects and improvisation, just two elements that are vital to the way music sounds today.
