Observer by Michael Hamburger is obviously about the media, specifically newspapers, today. ...
The first line of the first stanza immediately tells the reader the subject of this poem which is directly linked to the title ‘Observer’ and helps create an image of the speaker, holding a newspaper and simply observing and critiquing what this newspaper chooses to include, or omit. ... The language is very matter-of-fact which enhances the idea that the speaker is only an unbiased observer. ... Also, it would ruin the idea that the speaker is an observer without feeling and bias, if all of a sudden the speaker started to question the effects of the poem to him personally. ...
In conclusion this poem, written in the first person perspective, is used as a vehicle by the author, Michael Hamburger, to express his views of newspapers and journalism. The poem and title are closely linked, the observer is the speaker who is examining the “newspaper in [his] hands”, incidentally Observer is also much like the name of a leading British broadsheet called “The Observer. ... This proves that Michael Hamburgers observations were true, and that his poem has transcended generations and time.
