I think that Doris Lessing’s essay definitely asserts something about today’s society more than anything. Today’s societies are so concerned with being independent that they focus too much of their energy trying to not be a part of the group and forget to realize what group thoughts are; therefore people not only forget to be critical of these group thoughts, but do not even realize that these group thoughts are affecting them. Humans will inevitably fall into groupings. Since the beginning of time, and the beginning of each life, humans (and animals) are predisposed to attachments and dependency. As a race humans are innately connected to one another; the inability to admit that we are not independent beings only makes us (human beings) less aware of our own behaviors and thoughts, and more ignorant of how we could use this interdependency to our advantage.
