The main character is about to retire to his room for the evening and he asks the man with the withered arm if he would show him to his room. “If you will show me to this haunted room of yours, I will relieve you from the task of entertaining me. ... But if you go to the Red Room tonight-”. ... ” We are worried by this, as not only does this man have to spend the night in a supposedly haunted room, but he has to find his way there in a place he does not know, on his own. ... ‘The old fashioned furniture in the housekeeper’s room’. ... ‘Yes, the room is haunted’. ...
He is scared by the room itself. ... He cannot tell if he his alone in the room, because there is too much space for something to hide. ... The author again uses ambiguous phrases suggesting something is in the room with him.
