Explore and assess the nature of sport psychology and influence on performance
The application of psychology to sport is a relatively new concept. It has been widely utilised in North America for decades and it began to be utilised by performers in Great Britain since the 1960s.

Its use increased with the added pressure put on performers and has become common practice throughout the late 1980s right through the early 21st Century. ... Psychology can be used in a variety of ways within sport by the athlete, coach and somewhat indirectly by the media. Within sport, three areas of psychology play a large role, motivation, aggression and personality. Often performers are given a ‘pep’ talk before and during competition to keep them within the optimum zone of motivation and performance. It is within this respect that psychology is used to rouse the performer into a mental and physical state that is required to compete to their full potential.
