Describe the environment in which you grew up and how it has shaped you. My parents both hailed from poor backgrounds in the rural parts of Malaysia back in the 50s. In a bid for survival, my mother worked as a nurse, while my father delivered newspapers in the morning, worked as a construction worker in the afternoon, and traveled each night to deliver goods. Through opportunities, failures and hard work, my family was able to immigrate to Singapore, where my parents opened their first store. My two elder sisters left for Hong Kong to pursue their singing career when I was twelve; as a result, my parents placed their hopes on me to carry on the family tradition. I first started helping at my parents' Konica photo developing store when I was eight, working alongside my sisters on weekends. I was in charge of doing accounts on behalf of my mother and being in contact with numbers from a tender age sparked off the interest in mathematics in me. However, as business reached its peak in December, working full time became compulsory. After my parents expanded their business from one shop to a chain of businesses, and when my sisters left, I began to work significantly more hours.
