Most people aspire to be an individual in many ways. Some want a unique clothing style, and some want to listen to the music no one has heard of. Over the past few years I have been an avid music fan, and have gone to concerts averaging probably once a week. I have watched firsthand, two very unique groups emerge with a common value: independence. For these people it is undesirable and sometimes offensive to conform to many of societies standards, and they find comfort in different cliques or groups. It is “uncool” to be like everyone else, so they strive to be their own individual. There are many different groups in this genre, but the two that stand out most are the “Straight Edge”, and “Emo”. It is not my intent to negatively categorize people in any way, but I do feel the need to convey, in my opinion, a valid point that has been on my mind for quite some time. Although both groups’ lineage come from the late seventies and early eighties political punk era, the straight edge has mostly stayed true to the punk mindset. They usually network in large groups and all wear the straight edge symbol of the triple X.
