Abstract
The rapid deployment of E-business systems has surprised even the most futuristic management thinkers. Unfortunately, very little empirical research has documented the many variations of e-business solutions in comparison to the amount of IT products that software vendors have released into the marketplace. ... I have chosen to give a simplistic overview of the processes involved towards the selection of E-business software and some of the fundamental requirements towards the decision-making and procurement of successful E-business solutions. Concentrating predominantly upon the needs of a small business enterprise, I have outlined the aspects of initiating an e-business, the general software entities required, including the basic fundamental requirements needed for connecting these entities to the Internet successfully. ... Introduction
Considerable confusion exists in the literature concerning the various terminologies used to describe E-Business. ... I believe the core components of E-Business are Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Supply Chain Management (SCM) and eCommerce. ... It is important to note that a business may not deploy every component or even attempt to link the three components. Some texts use the term “Enterprise Resource Management” or ERM, as a comprehensive term meant to include all E-Business systems into one conceptual entity. ...
The objective of this research is to distinguish and develop an outlined plan towards determining the procedures, requirements and preferences for selecting E-business software components and tools for modern day E-Business entities. Furthermore, the objective is to determine the significant software entities that will lead to successful implementation of an E-Business solution. ... Overview of Electronic Commerce
“Electronic Commerce,” also known as E-Commerce and the predecessor of E-business, refers to a collection of processes that support commercial activities on a computer network. It involves the enabling of a business vision supported by advanced information technology and targets to improve efficiency and effectiveness throughout the trading process. ...
E-Commerce can generally be regarded as a broadening of the term “Electronic Data Interchange” (EDI) which was first introduced in the late 1970’s. ... The growth and acceptance of credit cards, Automated Teller Machines, and telephone banking in the 1980’s presented other forms of E-Commerce. While many of these electronic trading technologies had their own effects on markets and created a fair share of publicity, none of them has reached the level that electronic commerce, E-business, has done in recent years.
The commercialization and privatization of the Internet and its growing popularity are the foundations on which E-business grows. ... For the first time, this infrastructure has the potential to deliver what the notion of E-business has, indeed, implied [2].
Sharing in the complexities of this new and innovative frontier for doing business, are the complexities involved with selecting the proper tools to accomplish a successful E-business presence. This paper will focus upon the primary needs for an E-business entity. ... 2 Overview of E-business Planning
As with all business ventures, not just electronic commerce, proper planning is the key to laying out all of your resources and tying them in with your company’s goals. ...
Proper planning for a successful E-business requires determining some basic factors necessary for a web presence. Store location, advertising, shipping, and payment options are common entities between a physical business and an E-business. ... The tools for providing an E-business are very technically involved. ... 3 Overview of E-business Software
Probably, the most extensive list that a prospective E-business owner will have will be that of the software requirements and, more extensively, the software available. This is the area that can totally confuse the entrepreneurial spirit in many aspiring E-business owners. Never fear, for there are many simple solutions, especially for the small business owner, to provide a web presence without spending your last dime. ... This paper will attempt will simplify the means to select the proper software and should guide the small E-business owner towards a budget-conscious solution. ... Perhaps, issues such as these will lead the small E-business owner in one of two directions: keep it simple, choosing a “family” of products, or to simply rely on the expertise of a proven company to integrate the small business into the realm of electronic commerce.
