Perpetua says that “we (were) taken into the dungeon, and I was very much afraid, because I had never felt such darkness. ... However, the positive and joyful attitude that Perpetua kept was noticed by a soldier and assistant overseer of the prison. The soldier and overseer allowed many brethren to come see Perpetua and others before the fight between Perpetua and her friends against the beasts. Now the manner in which Perpetua and the other persecuted Christians were to be executed was cruel. ...
