The first chapter of the textbook focuses on writing summaries. Upon reading the first paragraph of the chapter I thought how simple this chapter was going to be. I have written summaries before and believed the process of writing them was easy. However as I continued reading, the process of writing a summary became complicated. I never thought about the objectivity of a summary and how we are sometimes biased in what is important due to our “prior knowledge” of the subject and our “frame of reference”. I also didn’t know that summaries are used quite often in college courses as a form of writing assignment. The section on plagiarism at the end of the chapter was also interesting. When the chapter discusses the process of writing a summary, I was a bit confused.
