Elizabeth Bates feels ‘grief and pity’ for her husband because she failed to recognise him for whom he was. Both Walter and Elizabeth’s relationship isn’t as close as they should be. They always had family conflicts and Walter rarely comes home from work to spend time with the family. “He gives me twenty-three shillings.” Tells us that Walter does not spend his wage money on his family but instead he spends them on drinking. Elizabeth feels grief after Walter’s death because of different reasons. She doesn’t have to cope with Walter not coming home for dinner.
