“In 1984 the worlds of the proles and the Party members are in stark contrast; but which group is happier?” In the worlds of 1984 Proles are clearly happier, party members may have better living conditions but are still faced with the daily pressures of life in Oceania. Proles are left alone, not being watched constantly and not having their thoughts spied on. They lead a carefree life in which they are given the liberty to do what they wish and express what they feel. And on the other end of society, Party members are constantly under the watch of the Thought Police and are forced to participate in the Two Minutes Hate, which may be completely against what they feel. Winston is an example of an unhappy party member, he described his daily life as slogging through dreary jobs, fighting for a place on the Tube, darning a worn-out sock, cadging a saccharine tablet, and saving a cigarette end. This makes his life as a party member sound dull, boring and degrading. It also takes its toll on his body; they had not much food to eat in their homes and where only given a small amount of coupons to trade in for clothing, food, etc.
