Dead Poets Society Essay In the Dead Poets Society there are many characters that follow a semi-Thoreau-ean path, but the English teacher, John Keating, follows closest to what Thoreau wants. Although he still tries to teach in a traditional school, Keating teaches in a very different way then is expected in the setting. In the school, almost every teacher has taught there for several years, and only Keating appears to be under 50. Due to his young spirit, his desire to live life up, and his encouragement of his students to do what they want, John Keating can safely be indicated as the character most closely following a Thoreau-ean path. As an English teacher at a prep school, most people expect to see an old, run out professor, barely able to make it to the classroom in order to teach. Instead, John Keating (Robin Williams) shows up, and blows the students’ minds. Thoreau said that “Age is no better, hardly so well, qualified for an instructor as youth, for it has not profited so much as it has lost.” In Keating’s case, this quote holds true.
