Charlotte Bronte wrote a number of novels one of which was a famous novel called Jane Eyre. This novel is much like a guide and diary to Jane’s, the main character’s development as a person and her maturation. The novel is about Jane Eyre who tells her life story about growing up as an orphan and having felt no love or affection. Helen Burns was one of the main characters that played a vital role in shaping Jane as an individual and impacting her development and maturation. Jane Eyre was introduced to Helen Burns at Lowood, where instantly she was drawn to her. ... After a few conversations, they instantly became close friends and as time progressed

Helen taught Jane various things. When Helen was scolded and mistreated by the teachers one day for not having cleaned her nails, Jane swore she would not stand for it if it had happened to her. Helen on the other hand told Jane that if she didn’t accept her punishment she would be sent away from Lowood. ... ”(54) This reply puzzled Jane because she never thought that accepting something one didn’t do was right or turning the other cheek for that matter. ... Jane had always thought that standing up and talking back was the best way out, but she matured through Helen’s help, and learned to accept her faults and seek forgiveness from God. When Jane herself got in trouble one day, she thought that the world was over for her and that everyone would hate her after that. ... Jane was surprised by her kindliness because she could not see why Helen would stay and befriend someone as disgraceful as her. ... ” (68) Jane learned that it did not matter what others said and she should not be easily influenced by their comments. Helen had shown Jane that it is what’s inside of her that matters and if she believed in her innocence, it did not matter what others thought.
