Hans Holbein was the only great German painter of his generation, renowned for his precise and realistic work. He was born immediately into a family of artists. His father and Uncle were both somewhat well known in Germany for their Gothic paintings. Holbein first started studying with his brother under their father in Germany but later moved to Basel Switzerland to begin his independent career. His first 10 years there from 1515-25 was extremely varied. During his time there he married a tanner’s widow and became a burgher in 1520. And by the next year he was making important decorations on the town hall.
