Telling the Future

Playing a major role in the story’s plot development, foreshadowing appears often in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies. Due to the boys’ lack of knowledge and organization, Goldings’ foreshadowing surrounding the fire shows that they are doomed for life. The boys obtain a lack of knowledge to build a fire, which foretells the dark times that lay ahead. When Jack and Ralph try to light a signal fire, they realize neither of them know how to, they also note each other’s hesitation to ask. Ralph’s ‘last confession of incompetence’ is when he asks if anyone has any matches, which foreshadows that Ralph, who is supposed to be a strong and forceful leader will eventually fall under the power of Jack.
