MACBETH CHARACTER STUDY
The main character of the play ‘Macbeth’ by William Shakespeare is Macbeth. ...
As a reader I know Macbeth will be the main character in the play, yet we only hear mention of him, we are not introduced to him in the first or second scenes. ...
“For brave Macbeth – well he deserves that
Despairing fortune, with his brandished steel,
Which smoked with bloody execution. ...
The first occasion in which Macbeth is brought into the play is when he has an encounter with the three witches. Earlier already, these witches have referred to Macbeth; this makes one anxious in wishing to know of what importance he has to them. ... The witches’ predictions to what lies ahead for Macbeth leaves him feeling confused and wary of what will become of him. ... His ambition only gets stronger and bigger as Lady Macbeth is very confident of her husband. ... ”
Here we see Lady Macbeth has an unpleasant side, one that is evil and cruel in plotting for Macbeth to be deceitful to King Duncan. Lady Macbeth tries to convince Macbeth that in murdering King Duncan he would then himself become King. As Macbeth has been a loyal servant to the king for so long he seems unsure. He knows it is the wrong thing to do yet his ambition and the influence of Lady Macbeth are too strong.
Although Macbeth has his guilt playing on him he tries to act shocked and upset about the Kings death, especially when telling Malcolm and Donalbain that their father has been murdered. I think here Lady Macbeth’s great influence over her husband has made him all the more egger to please her. ...
At this point in the play I still like Macbeth’s character and think that he is deep inside the good man he was at the start, although his ambition seems to be growing stronger and becoming more powerful, he seems more than able to justify those sins he has committed.
