impact of divorce on children

                                                  PAGE 1
Abstract
For obvious reasons, children see divorce as something very traumatic. ... Children

will question:

What if they both leave me? ...

Did I cause the divorce? ...

Children react in different ways with the onset of divorce. ... Some divorce

situations may make the child feel lonely. ...

No matter what the situation, the child will be affected in some way by a divorce.
Some children may become psychologically scarred from the experience, and still other

children may not be affected emotionally at all. ... (Children and Divorce: The Effects of Divorce on

Children)

Introduction

Divorce affects children. ... Some say that divorce itself is traumatic and is the death of the family as

they know it (What Kids Need from Divorcing Parents-Swallow). It means everything

you take for granted is about to change (Divorce Means Change for Kids Too! ...

It may also be seen as an “emotional whirlpool” (Focus on Kids: The Effects of Divorce

on Children-updated by Clark & Schneider).

Others see the divorce itself as a release from the tension that has been going on

between the parents, and they believe that the tension creates more trauma than the

divorced home (Children & Divorce: Telling the Children). Still others see the effect of

divorce on children as small and based more on the parents own psychological problems

and problems of poverty, racism, disability, etc. ... A review of multiple

articles implies that divorce’s effects on children can be impacted by how the parents

relate to the children and each other during the divorce. The way they continue to co-

parent the children (Children and Divorce: The Different Age Stages, and Children and

Divorce : Introduction) may also impact the child’s adjustment.

Method

Subjects

Twenty-six children whose parents divorced in 1972 in Marin County as studied for

25 years by Judith Wallerstein, and written about by Wallerstein and Lewis, served as

their subjects (Miller). Other subjects included nine children interviewed in Los Angeles,

ages 11 to 15 years old, of different ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds (Spann).
