A Perspective on Evangelism
Based on the Book Profane Evangelism my Mark Van Houten
Introduction:
I will address this paper by first discussing my initial reaction to the book and recapping my understanding on Evangelism. Secondly, I will highlight the key themes in the book that I thought were particularly impacting and finally I will conclude with my own thoughts on evangelism since reading this book. ... I thought the book was about “in your face evangelism”, that is pounding the pavement for Christ. ... Not to judge this methodology, but I often wondered how effective this type of evangelism was. ... I thought that profane evangelism was something similar. ...
Finally, I wondered what this book would teach me that was new, because I had been recently indoctrinated to an Evangelism methodology called Evangelism Explosion, which I experienced first hand and had become an enthusiastic believer in the approach. I would, however, not coin the Evangelism Explosion Approach as “profane”, on the contrary, I would use words like skillful, organized, consistent and competent. ...
I have been, however struggling with certain areas around evangelism, discipleship and salvation. ...
Concept 1 - Van Houten defines profane evangelism as “ to take God outside our temples and bring him to the people. ...
Concept 4 – “Evangelism is a verb” Showing the names of God. ... I am convinced that evangelism is demonstrated and not merely verbalized. ... My whole concept of Evangelism has expanded greatly because of this book.
