The main message that Charles Dickens wants to get across in the novella is that wealth does not bring happiness; it is the sharing of wealth that brings happiness. ... This is because they have friends to share the little money they have with, while Scrooge keeps all his money to himself and does not even spend much on himself. The main message that Dickens is trying to get across it that money should be shared between all people.
Right from the beginning of the novella Dickens introduces Scrooge in a very unpleasant way. ... ’ Then Dickens goes on to describe his appearance which is just as horrible, ‘The cold within him froze his old features, nipped his pointed nose, shrivelled his cheek, stiffened his gait; made his eyes red, his thin lips blue; and spoke out shrewdly in his grating voice. ... And does not allow him to put more coal on the fire when it is dying down as he keeps the coal in his office. When his nephew wished him a merry Christmas he replied very angrily, ‘Bah…Humbug!’ Showing that even Christmas does not cheer up Scrooge. And when they said bye he didn’t say merry Christmas, as it was not an occasion for him; he just said ‘Good afternoon’. ... But he is not happy even though he is so wealthy, and through this point Dickens is showing the readers that wealth doesn’t bring happiness. ... Marley tells Scrooge that he will be visited by three spirits, Ghost of Christmas past, Ghost of Christmas present and Ghost of Christmas yet to come.
