Materials: ring stand, screw clamp, Erlenmeyer flask, thistle tube, 2-holed rubber stopper, glass bend, delivery tubing, gas collecting bottles, trough, glass squares, wood splints, safety goggles and lab aprons. Procedure: 1. Wear lab aprons and safety goggles throughout the experiment. 2. Place several pieces of mossy zinc in the flask. Add water to just cover the zinc and clamp the flask to the ring stand. 3. Insert stopper with bend and thistle tube, making sure the thistle tube extends below the surface of the water. 4. Fill trough and gas collecting bottles with water. 5. Slowly and carefully add 5 mL of sulfuric acid (H2S04) through the thistle tube. 6. Allow bubbles to escape for 15 seconds and begin collecting the gas.
