God: Man’s saviour or fantasy? ...
Throughout the ancient book The Iliad, by Homer, the gods of Olympus have an enormous impact on the humans. ... Although the lives of men are greatly affected by the impact of the gods, they still appear to know when to not interfere with destiny. The destiny of man has clearly been outlined in The Iliad. It shows how every man has his own ending cut out for him that is decided by some power greater then all, even the gods. The gods in The Iliad do not interfere with it. The Iliad in particular, shows how the gods may not be the be-all and the end-all that it appears to be. ... Above all this book in particular has an enormous impact by God on it. Gods directly affect the main characters and events in this book.
Although god is more commonly referred to as man’s saviour, who is loved and cherished by all, his negative aspects are still portrayed. One of these aspects is shown clearly in The Iliad where gods blindly interfere into the wars of man, causing great damage and pain. ... The gods in The Iliad overpower the judgment of man. ... Here it is shown how the gods are portrayed as a power among the humans and can modify and favour anybody they wish, to have their way. The gods in The Iliad are shown as neglectful, arrogant and with no remorse.
