Video game violence is becoming a serious problem with todays youth. These violent video games have created psychological, physical, and mental health problems with “serious” young gamers. Many people are now becoming concerned with the after-effects of playing violent video games.
Video games were first introduced in the 1970s. ... By the end of that decade, they became a preferred childhood activity, and the parents of these children were concerned with the possibility of bad after-effects of playing too many video games. Early research on young video gamers was inconclusive and the studies were stopped. ... This sparked new interest into the research on video games and their effects on the youth. Research showed that there were some side effects from playing violent video games, but it showed no long-term effects (Cesarone, 1). ...
In the late 1990s and early to 2000s, video games were, and still are, filled with graphic violence. This graphic violence enraged the parents and eventually more research was done on the aftereffects of the violence in video games. ... Some of the children experienced aggressive behaviors and some of them were overweight due to the fact that they lacked exercise because they played too many video games or watched too much TV (Leo, 1-2). ... These games are among the most violent video games you can buy and yet are among the favorites for youth gaming. These games sparked uproar within communities, and enraged parents wondered why the videogame industry would develop such graphic and violent video games. The video game industry was not about to take all the blame for what was happening to children after they played violent video games (2-3).
The videogame industry stated that parents should monitor what type of video games their children are playing.
