Having into mind the above mentioned facts, I have decided to analyze the
unemployment constant problem in Macedonia. I believe that the unemployment is by
far the most damaging consequence of the post-Communist economies in transition.
This paper discusses the dynamics of unemployment in the country and it presents
the past and the current policies undertaken to address the issue. For better
understanding of the failures I would compare to the unemployment in Slovenia,
country which has similar political and cultural background, but was able to overcome
the unemployment problems and to reach a rate required for entering the European
Union. ... Policy Problem Description
There is not a single country in the world with zero percent of unemployment. Even
the wealthiest economies experience to some degree certain level of unemployment.
This has been proven to be healthy for the economies in all countries , known as
¡§friction unemployment¡¨-people move from a position to another position, they are
taking their time off to train them. A level of between three and six percent is
considered to be friction unemployment in the West (depending in the
country). ... They both have
been struggling with higher level of unemployment, known as permanent
unemployment meaning that the same people are being unemployed for more than a
year. ... 1 The Macedonian Unemployment
To be able to understand the deep roots of the unemployment we have to look at the
past of this country and analyze the situation before and after the Yugoslovenian
collapse. The fact that Macedonia has been dealing with long-term unemployment is
the main concern here. ... Unemployment in the past
Years Unemployed % First-time job seekers
1976 98,114 22. ... Macedonia)
As it can be seen from the table, significant unemployment had been present since
1976. ... Nowadays it has been estimated that the rate of the unemployment is
37% . ... 2 The Slovenian Unemployment
Being part of the Yugoslavia Federation, Slovenia has been facing the same problems
like the rest of the member countries including Macedonia. ...
Slovenia has also struggled with permanent unemployment in the past. ...
From the graph we can see that the critical period was the period followed by the
transition, however opposite to Macedonia we can realize that Slovenia has
been able to stagnate and even decrease the rate of unemployment in the last couple of
years, which is not the case with Macedonia.
