It reflects the Anglo- Saxon culture. - Ethos- the character or fundamental values for a culture. - The Anglo- Saxons believed in wergild- reparations or payments to the kin of someone who is killed even accidentally. Beowulf - Beowulf was a folk tale- which was changed by word of mouth and finally written - Beowulf fights Grendel and Grendels mom and a Dragon. > Germanic legends, Denmark & Sweden, and Pagan beliefs are all mixed up in this poem. - Grendel becomes an allegorical representation of evil. - Allegorical is basically an extended metaphor. - Wyrd- Fate… a man could influence his own wyrd. " what God ordains must happen; what God merely knows can happen but need not happen" - Beowulf fights Grendel with his Hands - Beowulf fights Grendel's mom with a giant magical sword. - " conceived by a pair of those monster's born of Cain" - Grendel is a recreation of a Germanic monster Troll. - Beowulf begins with a creation story. - Hrothgar- King of the Danes "Herot" mead hall. - He never dared to touch Hrothgars thrown because it was protected by God. - Evil had taken over Hate had triumphed. - Before the people turned to Beowulf … they turned to God. But they also turned to their Pagan gods when they became desperate. - Beowulf's sword was named Hrunting. - After Beowulf defeated Grendels mother, returns to his uncle and his king. - Beowulf becomes a rich man. - The Geat race dies out. - Beowulf gives Wiglaf ruler ship over his kingdom.
