Character of Cleopatra

The play takes place in pre-Christian Britain, when Augustus was Emperor of Rome. The gods in the play are Roman gods. Cymbeline, King of Britain, has a daughter, Imogen, by his first marriage. Secretly, and against her father's wishes, Imogen has married a poor man, Posthumus Leonatus. Cymbeline's evil second wife also has a child by a former marriage, a dull oaf called Cloten. The Queen wishes Cloten to marry Imogen. Cloten pursues Imogen despite the fact she is already married and clearly despises Cloten. On hearing of Imogen's marriage, Cymbeline banishes Posthumus. In Rome, Posthumus meets Iachimo who, hearing Posthumus praise Imogen, wagers that he can seduce Imogen. Iachimo travels to London and meets Imogen, whom he finds virtuous, incorruptible - and utterly desirable. He hides in a trunk which is stored in Imogen's bedroom for the night.
