In The Yellow Wallpaper, the female protagonist and her physician husband rented a mansion for a period of time in order to recuperate the narrator from the “temporary nervous depression” or what is scientifically termed as neurasthenia. ... As the time goes by, her condition has worsened despite of all the efforts they have made. From this point of time, she becomes more related to the wallpaper which is situated inside the room she lived. ... In The Yellow Wallpaper, women are also seen the same. ...
There are some reasons that make the protagonist to displays perseverance and endurance which lead her to madness. ... To sum up, the way she is being treated is the cause of the endurance that she displays. ... To conclude, the life of imprisonment that she is having now is the display of her endurance and this leads to the displays of perseverance and madness.
Based on the fact she is being treated badly and live in imprisonment, she tries to escape herself from the situation and this relates to wallpaper which will be discussed later in this paragraph. Initially, the narrator sees the wallpaper in the perspective of an interior decorator and she has a dislike for the wallpaper. The words “dull”, “repellent color” and “smouldering unclean yellow” shows her dislike towards the wallpaper. As time goes by she becomes obsessed with it for she is fascinated with the pattern and the hidden secrets of the wallpaper. Eventually the wallpaper becomes the part of her life and everyday she tries to unlock the hidden secrets of the wallpaper. ... Based on this fact, we can say that the woman inside the wallpaper who is struggling to break free from the bars symbolizes the desires of the narrator to be free. ... However the fact is that she is not allowed to be free and she is accepted it but actually inside her heart she resents the decision and shows it onto the wallpaper, “[The pattern of the wallpaper] slaps you in the face, knocks you down, and tramples upon you”. Knowing that the wallpaper as the prison, the narrator tries to tear out the wallpaper and the climax is in the last chapter when she is almost finished tearing out the wallpaper. She thinks that not only her, but the figure inside of the wallpaper has gained freedom from the prison (wallpaper) and they could not be inside anymore since the wallpaper has already been teared out. To sum up, the narrator’s effort to escape from the prison is the displays of perseverance.
