The Screwtape Letters
By: C. ... Lewis
The Screwtape Letters is a collection of letters from an older and very experienced devil, Screwtape, to his younger novice of a nephew, Wormwood, who is about to begin his first attempt at tempting a human soul. ... In each letter Screwtape responds to his nephews previous letter with words of advice on how to most effectively keep Wormwoods "patient" away from God and from becoming a Christian. Through the course of these letters, Lewis examines issues such as good and evil and those little practices and beliefs that bring people to hell. To that end, Screwtape suggests keeping the patients mind full of petty thoughts about the shortcoming of others attending church. This tactic, Screwtape explains, will undermine any beliefs the patient might have about a religion practiced by those flawed folks. ... Screwtape craftily encourages Wormwood to "turn up the heat" on the patient, and even uses his friends and family to try to snare him. Each time the patient does not yield to temptation, Screwtape threatens and scolds Wormwood, and gives him further evil ideas to trap the unknowing saint.
