“In vain the first born seraph tries to sound the depths of love divine!”
-And Can It Be
The bible itself is often referred to as the ‘Book of Love’. God’s Love revealed to us through His Son and His Word. ... I recall being impressed by the fact that my first concordance showed that ‘God’, ‘LORD’, and words meaning ‘love’ were the most abundant in all of scripture. An attempt to sum up the teaching of scripture on love is therefore difficult and will always be inadequate!
What may be clear from the beginning is that there are many terms for love within scripture, each with their own meaning. There is a brotherly love phileo, a physical love eros, and a more selfless, giving love agape. The love that I am summarising here is the agape love that God has for us, ultimately demonstrated in the person of Jesus Christ, and how that has been a part of my experience.
The teaching of scripture of love may start in many places. ... (These two passages get to the core of the issue of God’s love by showing how it is awesomely revealed through salvation and also what its character is respectively.)
John the disciple had started life as a fisherman but by the end of three years of intense experience had a wholly profound and deep understanding of the Love of God. He was the “disciple whom Jesus loved” (John 21:20) and is always found close to Him in accounts in scripture. ... If Paul can be called on to impart a profound sense of grace, John is certainly over qualified to convey to us the intimacy of love that God revealed in Jesus.
There are three main aspects of God’s love found throughout scripture which are summed up in 1 John 4. Namely, that love comes from God, that love gives, and that ultimately God is love.
John exhorts believers to “love one another for love comes from God.” Here we see find the true motivation for love in that it finds its origin not in human desire but in God Himself.
