The aim of this essay is to reflect on an incident, explore and discuss the importance of having a comprehensive understanding of anatomy and physiology in one’s area of practise. In keeping in line with the NMC code of conduct 2000, permission from the client in question was sought after and confidentiality will be maintained through omitting the client’s name. John’s model of reflection (1994) cited by Bond and Holland (1999) will be used to aid me with the reflective process (Appendix I). To fully appreciate the essence of reflection in the practice, we need to define reflection. According to Johns (2000), reflection is a ‘window through which the practitioner can view and focus self within the context of his/her own lived experience in ways that enable him/her to confront, understand and work towards resolving the contradictions within his/her practice between what is desirable and actual practice’. Description Over the past four years I have worked in purely orthopaedic wards.
