“Who’s broad stripes and bright stars...” these words are in the national anthem written by Francis Scott Key, and words represent the flag. But more then just a song these words are uttered every day, while we salute the symbol of our country. There has been an ongoing controversy since the 1960’s that it is unconstitutional for the government to not allow people the express themselves by burning the flag. The claim is that under the first amendment freedom of speech includes the right to expression, and the right to protest. While others (including myself) feel that the flag is a symbol of the history of our country and it is unpatriotic to burn the flag. The pieces of cloth that were bound together in the the time of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson stood for an emerging country, and the flag was praised by all. Betsy Ross, one of George Washington’s seamstresses made this flag, to represent the original thirteen colonies. Now this flag bears fifty stars but still glorifies the thirteen original colonies by having thirteen stripes.
